Atmosphere and Remote Sensing (Butz - Group)
Our group investigates the gaseous composition of the Earth's atmosphere. To this end, we use and develop spectroscopic remote sensing methods that enable high-precision measurements of atmospheric gases from various observation platforms.
Our research focuses on the greenhouse gases carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4), which drive climate change through their anthropogenic emissions. Our goal is to better understand both the anthropogenic and biogeochemical processes that control the concentrations of CO2 and CH4 in the atmosphere. In addition to greenhouse gases, we also study photochemically active gases that contribute to air pollution in the lower atmosphere and ozone chemistry in the middle atmosphere.
