Research topics in the Physics of Environmental Archives Our Research topics

Our research group is working on four main topics related to climate reconstruction and the cycles of substances in the ocean and karst. Climate reconstruction with marine sediment archives is the main focus.

We work with tropical and cold-water corals, manganese crusts, marine sediments and seawater. To investigate the continental climate in the past, we work with stalagmites and calcareous tuffs. In stalactite caves we analyse the composition of drip water and in the ocean we study the cycles of the trace substances used. A central area of research concerns age determination using the Th/U disequilibrium method and the radiocarbon method. We also use stable, radiogenic and natural radioactive isotopes to learn about the environmental conditions of the past. Further information on the research topics already carried out and current research topics can also be found on the DFG website (GEPRIS).
